Bsurfaces 1.5 for Blender

Today I stumbled upon a hot video on Vimeo, it was about Bsurfaces for Blender.
With this Blender Addon it is possible to make good use of freehand curves that you can turn into a surface with options for the divisions you want to have.

But see for yourself:

Bsurfaces will have a pay-per-copy period and then will be turned into GPL. You can donate or buy the addon here for $39.

First steps with Kinect and Motionbuilder

I got a Kinect for my Birthday, yesterday I set it and made some research stuff in Openframeworks, Cinder and Processing. Since it was a bit of trouble finding out which drivers and libraries to use on Windows I had to fresh up my brain and tried the Kinect with Motionbuilder.

I used Jasper Brekelmans fantastic Brekel Kinect as device in Motionbuilder. Of course I had other drivers installed (Freenect) that I had to get rid off first, after that everything went very straightforward. Here a quick'n dirty video I made after a half hour of dancing and playing around:

Blender Cycles Renderer Testdrive

While comparing VRay RT, iray and Cycles I thought about showing a little video on the integration of Cycles in Blender. After waiting a couple of months I decided to give the Cycles renderer for Blender a shot again. Since I've built a new computer it was a nobrainer to give it a shot and see GPU rendering integrated in Blender.
It is amazing what is going on with Blender development these days, see yourself...

3D World magazine CG Awards 2011

My favourite magazine 3D World launches another CG Awards poll.

Go on their CG Awards 2011 website and vote. It is great that Blender (Software Update of the Year) and 3D-Coat (Software Innovation of the Year) are also on the list. This puts both applications on the map again.

Demodays 2011 watch - create - compete

The Demoscene is gathering again in Switzerland for the 20th time (This reminds me again how old I am). Formerly known as Buenzli Demoparty the organizers changed the event name to Demodays to have a more specific name for the event.

Autodesk Composite 2011 and 2012 Copy & Paste Bug

I have seen a strange behaviour of Autodesk Composite 2011 / 2012 while teaching my customers. On about 80% of their workstations a nasty bug happened and crashed Composite immediately. As soon as  a CTRL+C CTRL+V operation is performed Composite crashes. And you'll use Copy&Paste a lot...

The solution is simple but not really logical to me. Update the graphic card driver!

The problem occurs using both vendors ATI and NVIDIA. So in case you this bug, try updating your drivers. I hope this helps out someone ;)

Imaging the future symposium 2011 conference report

Yesterday I attended the imaging the future symposium 2011 that ran beside the NIFFF Festival (Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival). I had the chance to test my french speaking and undestanding again, most of the symposium was held in french, lucky that we had french in school :)

Autodesk Suites FLEXLM Network licensing Tip

There is something I find really annoying with FLEXLM licensing, I really have to be lucky to get it running correctly at the first time after installation. Everytime I have another issue. After all the years of trouble and happyness I think soon I have all the solutions for different License Manager behavior sorted out.

Cooler Master HAF-X GPU Cooling...Fail...

Yesterday I wrote that I mount another fan to cool the GTX 590 down a bit. The cooler Master HAF X Case has got a lot of coolers already and provides an Air Duct specialy to add another Fan to the GPU.

The GTX 590 is just too big :), First I had to cut off some locking nibbles, then I had to cut out the opening for the Power supply a bit. With all the assembly done I tested the temperatures again. They did not change a lot, the GPU near the fan even got a bit hotter. All right I have an Airflow problem there. Now I try to cut off a "lot!" of the airduct for the next test. if this also fails I model a mount in Rhino and 3D-Print it, this would actually be a lot of fun and a feasible use of 3D printing.
