iray compared to mental ray first impressions

I built a new computer a few days ago with a Nvidia GTX 590 graphic card to compare 3DS Max 2012 rendering speed and quality between VRay, VRay RT, mental ray and iray.

GTX 590 Speed, Memory and Temperature

The GTX 590 has got 2 GTX 580 GPU's on a single slot card with 2x512 CUDA processing units. Yes that is more than the higher end cards (Quadro, Tesla...) have onboard. For the money I spend on this gamercard I can buy 2 or three if they get toasted while heavily rendering. I get more bang for the buck than the high end cards. With careful cooling and maybe adjusting the clock speed I can squeeze all out that I need.

Basler Zolli Gala Dinner 2010 Making Of

Here we go, let's get some content...This was a production I made with Konnex for the Zoo Basel, i modeled an elephant and a penguin and prepared 2D cutting data for the waterjet. Finaly the models got assembled. They are up to 2 meters long ;)

The workflow started with a low poly model I made out of a plane, then I added some Z-Brush, 3D-Coat magic for the sculpting, finaly I created a Grasshopper nodesystem in Rhino that helped me to make the slices and the 2D layout for cutting the parts out. Enjoy :)

3DS Max 2011 Using an Audio Controller in the Slate Material Editor

Here a little trick that shows the power of the slate editor in 3DS Max 2011.

We use a Youtube video's audio to control a color value in real time.

It is nothing new in 3DS Max but in 3DS Max 2011 through the use of nodes, the schematic network allows easy control over the nodes.

NURBS filetransfer between Rhino and 3DS Max using npower PowerTranslators

Often you want to fix NURBS surfaces or use tools that are available in external software. The ideal partner for this kind of work is npower's PowerTranslators. Using this plugin you can transfer NURBS Date between Rhino (or IGES/STL compatible programs) and 3DS Max.

Rhino Pipeblending Tip

Here a method of using the pipe tool to make exact splits/trims to use for blending surfaces.

This method works a lot faster than using lofted curves to make the same.

Griesser Making Of

Here something I made for Griesser back in 2009

I made the model completely by hand in 3DS Max using the Npower PowerNURBS Plugin.

The light setup is very easy. I used a mrSkyportal and a blackbody map to achieve it.

3DS Max 2011 and Composite: 32bit Framebuffer Tip

When compositing in a physical correct way using 3DS Max 2011 you have to make sure that your framebuffer type is set to 32bit. If not, some serious headache can occur while trying to get the results in compositing you want.

In 3DS Max 2011 Design the framebuffer is already set to 32bit, so you'll have no problems there.

I hope this helps you out (I needed quite a time of trial and error to find this out).

"Eurohaus" Making of

A little making of the "Eurohaus" Project I did for a presentation at the Autodesk BIM conference in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The model was created in Revit and imported into 3DS Max 2011 where I added some Materials, Trees and other props to the scene. I then rendered simple elements with V-Ray and composited it all together in Autodesk Composite.

I finished the project in about 4 hours since there was very little preparation time.

How to make 3D outlines for lasercutting robots using Rhino

This Video is about creating Outlines of 3D Surfaces to generate a coordinate base for a lasercutting 3D robot using Rhino.

The solution is quite easy but you have to figure that one out first ;)

I have a customer who needed help and I made this video for him.

3D-Coat 3DS Max Applink

Here I show the functionality of 3D-Coat's Applink Tool.

You can exchange Data between 3D-Coat and different 3D applications like Blender, Softimage, Lightwave, Rhino, Maya, Cheetah and the Octane renderer.

It is great for UV-Mapping, Sculpting and Texturepainting.

Starting enthusiastic

All right after some talks and long back and forth decisions...Here comes my private Blog. Since I do not want to show my Testrenderings, 3D News and other stuff on my companyblog, you get it all here.

Now, on to find out how to configure this baby and see what happens to mediafiles I want to link in.
It is my first blogger blog, so have mercy while I try to fiddle around with the design. Anyway I think content is more important...

Feel free to contact me for work, hehe (And questions on 3D related stuff).
